In 1969, at God’s call, Dr. Porter returned to Sarasota to work with the local youths in Sarasota and Manatee counties. He founded the Westcoast Gospel Chorus of Florida, the premiere singing group for the Westcoast Centers. The chorus increased in numbers and purpose and, in 1971,God instructed him to start the Henry L. Porter Evangelistic Association, Incorporated.
His brilliant voice lights the sky. The Ì HLP Love Campaign® television show, airing since1986, made its national debut on BET in 2004-2006. He’s appeared on Bobby Jones Gospel. He shared the stage with great singers as Albertina Walker, Cassietta George, Shirley Caesar, The Mighty Clouds of Joy, Andraé Crouch, Jessie Dixon, etc. He sat on panel for nationally televised, “Let’s Talk Church” filmed in Las Vegas, 2002. His CD “Sign Me Up!” held the charts #1 in Miami for two months.
Bishop Porter has authored numerous books, including several books of poetry. He is publisher of the Sword of the Spirit Newsletter, Black Action Magazine, Westcoast Magazine and HLP Records. He has recorded seventeen albums, and has written over 2,000 songs. THE GOSPEL AWARDS instituted The Henry Porter Award, honoring Music that Does More Than Sound in 2003. In 2003, The Gospel Awards established The Henry Porter Award, honoring Music that Does More Than Sound Award. In 2004, Andraé Crouch, the world-renown Gospel artist , also honored with Hollywood Star, received The Henry Porter Award. He is a member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, and the Gospel Music Association.
In 1976, he married Cynthia E. Johnson, his partner and friend. They have three sons, Henry, Étienne Jaberly, and Zacchur Chalome; and, one daughter, Tsadok Hazel.
